O impedimento espacial é a restrição causada pela presença de átomos volumosos ligados ao átomo central. Por exemplo, sabemos da existência da molécula PCℓ5 (pentacloreto de fósforo), que apresenta cinco átomos de cloro ligados a um átomo de enxofre. Porém, a molécula PI5 (“pentaiodeto de fósforo”) não existe, pois os átomos de iodo são bastante volumosos, o que impede que 5 deles se liguem ao átomo de fósforo.
